MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN, MARCO VAN EMBDEN-

MarcoIt is my pleasure to welcome you to the online home of the Friends of the UJC - Cape Town. Over time, this site will be upgraded as we have a vision for it becoming a networking hub for South Africans around the globe. For now, it serves as an informational portal for those interested in learning more about Cape Town and one of the Jewish Community's most exciting ventures- The Friends of the UJC - Cape Town.
I am by nature a passionate person, but I find few things as compelling as the sublime beauty of Cape Town and the strength and vitality of her Jewish community. As a community, we recognised that these passions were shared by both full time residents of Cape Town and our frequent visitors.
The Friends of the UJC - Cape Town was launched to afford those individuals who do not reside here all year round with an opportunity to forge a sense of community, celebrate Cape Town and Jewish life here. Please take a few moments to read more about the Friends of the UJC - Cape Town below.
We hope to see you at one of our upcoming functions.

PURPOSE OF THE FRIENDS OF THE UJC CAPE TOWN-

The Friends of the UJC Cape Town was borne of the realisation that Jewish life in this city offers something unique and very special to both the Mother City's residents and her regular visitors. Consequently, this Jewish Community warrants the investment and support of all of its stakeholders.

The Friends of the UJC, through its spectacular annual event, attended by approx 140 people, raises funds for the David Susman Community Foundation. This Foundation will ensure that Jewish life in this city is secured, even during difficult times that might befall us. The partnership of the Friends of the UJC Cape Town truly speaks to the notion of a global Jewish community caring for one another.

THE DAVID SUSMAN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION:
The David Susman Community Foundation (DSCF) is the sole beneficiary of the funds raised by the Friends of the United Jewish Campaign Cape Town. The DSCF was established three and a half years ago to protect the Cape Town Jewish Community against the tumult that is almost invariably a part of a community's narrative. With the foresight of the Cape Town Jewish Communal leadership the DSCF will generate income which will be utilized in the event of financial difficulties incurred by the community. The fund currently stands at R16.9 million with a goal of R50 million having been set. Of the R16 million in place roughly R6.5 million stems from funds raised through the Friends of the United Jewish Campaign. Special mention must be made of the Friends of the UJC's four magnanimous patrons: Mick Davis, Sol Kerzner, Natie Kirsh and Eric Samson whose extraordinary philanthropy has inspired others to support the Friends of the UJC Cape Town. Under the leadership of its trustees: Steven Cohen, Steven Nathan, John Rabb, David Resnick, Samuel Seeff, Simon Susman and Marco Van Embden the funds have been invested so as to garner positive growth and returns for this community.

WHAT DOES THE UJC IN THE FRIENDS OF THE UJC- CAPE TOWN STAND FOR?

The UJC is the United Jewish Campaign of Cape Town. Our Community has one umbrella fundraising body for its entire communal infrastructure - the UJC. Each year, the UJC must raise approximately R50 million rand to meet the fiscal deficits incurred by twenty seven Jewish beneficiary organisations. In addition the UJC raises money to support Keren Hayesod in Israel. Funds are allocated to all Welfare and Communal organisations by an Allocations Committee which scrutinises the budgets and practices of the beneficiary organisations so as to ensure compliance with sound governance and due diligence. In the event that the UJC is unable to meet its campaign target in any given year, and consequently cannot provide the financial resources on which the Jewish organisations of Cape Town rely, the David Susman Community Foundation will make the income of its investments available to the UJC.
